USMLE1-Muscle cells of Cardiac physiology

The muscle cells of the heart can be divided into 2 parts

  • Muscle cells specialized in the conducting system: The conducting system includes:
    • Inoatrial (SA) node
    • Atrioventricular (AV) node
    • Conducting cells
  • Atrial conducting cells are found in internodal pathways
  • Ventricular conducting cells consist of the AV bundle, bundle branches, and Purkinje fibers

Contractile cells:  Contraction is what muscles do, and in the heart, the contraction is what makes the heart beat.  When it beats, it is actually moving in an organized pattern that pumps (squeezes) the blood in a certain direction.  I will refer to this as the heart's mechanical ability.
